Leytonstone's Quite Big Quiz of the Year 2018 - In Aid of Cyril Flint Befrienders Charity

Wonderbar’s own Paul Guided Missile (with a little bit of help from his old pal BBC’s Marc Rilley) has written a special End of Year Quiz with all the proceeds going to the really fantastic Cyril Flint Befrienders Charity – https://cyrilflint.org/) .

It’s funny to think there were actually a lot more news stories this year than just the br*x*t ones, and we’ll be quizzing you on the news, movies, tv, music and general tittle tattle of the year and issuing prizes for the year’s best brains,. BBC8’s Marc Riley is putting together an exclusive round for the occasion and E11’s own Paul Guided Missile (a former member of Frank Sidebottom;s Oh Blimey Big Band) will be playing the biggest hits of the year LIVE on his synthesiser !

It’s the best quiz in town and you can reserve a table by emailing us at hello@wonderbar.net

It’s the best deal available so let’s take it! 😉

Darren Hayman / Terry Edwards – Double Bill!
Dec 14 @ 7:30 pm – 10:30 pm

We asked 2 of our pals if they’d like to come and do a gig for us here at Wonderbar – Imagine our delight when they both said yes. We were so excited we put them on the same bill!

They also happen to be two somewhat legendary figures in the underground music scene, Darren perhaps best known as the writer, lead singer and guitarist in Hefner and Terry having been a founding member of The Higsons, \ member of Gallon Drunk and as a session musician or collaborator with artists such as Madness,, PJ Harvey, Nick Cave, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Tom Waits, The Blockheads and Robyn Hitchcock.. to name just a few!

We Can Be Heroes Christmas Party
Dec 16 @ 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm
We Can Be Heroes Christmas Party

We Can Be Heroes is a family friendly daytime disco for grown-up geeks and kid sidekicks. It’s for fans of comic books, superheroes, Star Wars, Harry Potter, Star Trek, Dungeons & Dragons and every aspect of geek culture, past and present. It’s a whole afternoon of festive awesomeness!

After the tremendous success of our Halloween Party in October, we’re returning for one more afternoon this year, with a Christmas party at Wonderbar in Leytonstone. The venue is a small, fully licensed, vegan café, so tickets for this one are strictly limited.

The music will be our usual mix of of blockbuster soundtracks and 80s pop, upbeat indie and big, silly rock, plus some seasonally appropriate favourites. Expect to hear Pat Benatar, the Ramones, Weird Al, Weezer, Kiss, AC/DC, Cyndi Lauper, They Might Be Giants, the Jacksons, Violent Femmes, Bon Jovi, David Bowie, Kenny Loggins, John Williams and more. All played at a child-friendly volume that’s still perfect for dancing.

Face painting will once again be provided by Love Latouche Faces. There will be drawing materials available for budding comic artists. Plus, a selection of sweet and savoury treats and hot and cold drinks to buy from Wonderbar itself.

Dressing up really creates the atmosphere. Whilst we don’t have a strict costume policy, we want you – grown-ups and kids – to come dressed up as your favourite characters from comics, films, sci-fi or fantasy. Hero or villain? The choice is yours.

There is no admission to adults unless they’re part of a group that includes children. So friends, grandparents, mentors, stoic and long-suffering manservants, etc. are all welcome. We are operating an inclusive event, and we want it to be both safe and fun for everyone who comes along.

Advance tickets cost just £4 per adult, £3 per child under 14 (plus booking fee) from www.ticketlab.co.uk/We-Can-Be-Heroes-Disco. Children aged 2 and under are free, but will still need a ticket (no booking fee will apply).

Excelsior!

“The best pop quiz in town” – Pub Quizzers

“It’s far from serious stuff as the potty-mouthed quizmaster guides you through some pretty silly rounds, including one based on Bob Holness’s ‘Blockbusters’. – Time Out ‘London’s Ten Best Pub Quizzes’.

“Die-hard musos will love it, with rounds such as Badly Drawing Boy, in which teams guess the LP sleeve from a kiddy’s scrawl.” – British Airways” High Life magazine.

“I was really expecting it to be damn tough, but it was definitely accessible to all levels of music knowledge (the first question was to name just one member of JLS – no, we didn’t get it)……….
Here’s a couple of questions that I can remember – What was Bob Marley’s middle name? Nesta (we got that one)
What was the name of Tele Sevales’ big hit in the 70s? If (we didn’t get that one). In the picture round there was a picture of two toilets as a cryptic clue to an artist – who was it? Lulu, of course (got that one too). Lots of fun … and the host is quite the wit.” – “I ♥ MUSIQUE

“Paul is a London legend” – Billy Reeves, BBC London 94.9

“This one is big. Really big… ” – Qype

“Quizmaster Paul is halfway through a bravura performance of Bat Out Of Hell on his Bontempi keyboard. I look around and a good 60 per cent of the assembled audience is literally weeping with laughter. This is without doubt the best pub quiz of all time” – Jude Georges, ‘Twee’ fanzine

“Some Northern bloke hosts it and for one round plays pop hits on a Bontempi organ.. everyone laughs their heads of when they realise the plinky plonk bossanova tune he’s playing is actually Anarchy In the UK or something, then he looks up completely straight faced and says ‘OK, so 2 points if you can guess that one.’ Haha…” – View London.co.uk
